Iris plants thrive best in well-drained soil under full sun to partial shade. They are typically planted as rhizomes or bulbs in late summer to early fall. Rhizomes should be planted just below the soil surface, with the tops slightly exposed, while bulbs are planted deeper. Space plants about 12 to 24 inches apart to allow for their spreading growth habit. Irises require regular watering during their active growing season but can tolerate dry conditions once established. To promote healthy blooms, fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in early spring before the bloom period begins. Deadheading spent flowers will help maintain the plant’s appearance, and dividing the rhizomes every few years will prevent overcrowding and encourage vigorous blooming.
